Morris Edward Whitmore 89, beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Sunday March 3, 2024, at The William M. Dunlap Center for Caring Hospice Home in Raleigh, NC. Morris was born on January 31, 1935, in Warren County, NC, son of Kenneth and Helen Whitmore. He grew up on a share crop farm where he raised various crops and tobacco. He was the football co-captain at Norlina High School and fell in love with cheerleader Jean. After graduation, he was drafted in the United States Army in 1958, traveled to Germany, where he served as a mail clerk. He often told stories of his time there with Elvis Presley. Morris married his love Jean on April 1, 1961. He began working as a foreman for Seaboard Coast Line Railroad. He was also a volunteer firefighter for Norlina Fire Dept. He moved his wife Jean and son Anthony to Coats, NC in 1972 and began work for Durham and Southern Railroad. He also was a volunteer firefighter at Coats-Grove Fire Rescue. He was a member of Coats Baptist Church and enjoyed his Sunday school class. After retirement, Morris worked odd jobs and helped widows in his community. Morris was a simple, hardworking man. He loved people, knew no stranger, and was a storyteller. He loved his family, good food, football, and hunting. There was just something about the sound of beagles chasing rabbits and his competitive nature. He was preceded in death by his parents Kenneth Welford Whitmore and Helen Felts Whitmore, the last of nine children.  Morris is survived by his wife Jean Capps Whitmore, son Anthony Whitmore and wife Teresa, grandchildren Ashley Wheeler (James), Madison Whitmore (Jordan), great grandchildren, Christopher, Elizabeth, Keeton, and Anthony. A service will be held on Monday April 1, 2024, at 1pm at Norlina Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorials in Morris's honor be made to The William M. Dunlap Center for Caring Hospice Home in Raleigh, NC.
